Collateral

With a long and growing interest in clothing, Albert Huang decided to challenge himself by taking his non-fashion knowledge and applying it to clothing. The result is a capsule collection entitled Collateral, which mixes Huang’s medical background with artisanal garment making. His profession is mirrored in the designs with the focus being on the human body – seams on garments for example follow nerve paths and blood flow as well as natural skin tension lines. The construction pays attention to anatomical landmarks and body movement, giving the pieces a distinct look as well as the wearer a sense of familiarity. The materials give the accessories an organic feel and pay homage to Huang’s work in the hospital and laboratories. Overall, the thought behind the label derives from a desire to explore the human form and approach wearable design from a less traditional point of view.

Huang was influenced to pursue the project by the work of designers such as Carol Christian Poell, Maurizio Altieri and Maurizio Amadei, who are all known for their distinct styles and experimental working methods. Learning from studying garments at stores and in his closet, Huang took an understanding of garment construction and began experimenting with pattern making and sketching. Made of carefully picked materials and based on unique patterns, the pieces have all been born through trial and error. With plans to make certain pieces available for order and distributing some through retailers, the project is off to a strong start and will continue to evolve through Huang’s experimentation.
