Devoa fall-winter 2012: DEVOTION

The photo shoot for the new collection from Japanese label Devoa took place at the label’s atelier, and in a nearby ancient park, famous for being the home of a couple who gave their house and land to the city as a memorial to their devotion for one another. The name of the label is infused with the idea of devotion - towards quality, beauty, purity, artisanship.

As typical, the collection is minimal, natural and organic, but with an emphasis on layering and lighter fabrics. Designer Daisuke Nishida wanted to concentrate on garments that would be unique to DEVOA. Among other details, he created an original colour with tones of slate, green and grey, by combining two different colored threads into a weave.

After collaborating on a research video with a local yoga expert last season, the patterns and cuts are now even more technically balanced between a tight silhouette and space for optimum freedom of movement. Materials utilized for the collection include Japanese tweed, paper and a mink and wool mix. There are also limited numbers of designs using antique fabrics. Other highlights include a cashmere coat cut from one piece of cloth, a new leather sneaker design and a double-strap leather bag.

Barbara Bologna is an Italian sculptress and body art performer who, after graduating from the Accademia di Belle Arti” in Brera –Milan in 2000, has gone on to create her own clothing and accessories line AREA. Barbara’s work is inspired and driven by both the worlds of Art and Music, and is influenced by intense, revolutionary and sometimes transgressive visionaries from both worlds. She uses design as a route to discover her personal artistic freedom and create art from her soul. She describes her designs as being “containers full of artistic substance, sealed by my soul and by all the things that I am”.

For this reason she is fiercely independent and operates outside the usual fashion world norms, choosing to collaborate with only those that she feels to be part of her evolving creative family. “Area is my space, my emotional and physical place in which I find art, fashion, music and theatre…the place of those who are able to feel the rest through the dress.”

For the upcoming fall-winter 2012 season Barbara Bologna will create her first ever male / unisex exhibition to be shown at STEALTH Gallery in Paris.

In order to further research and test the wearabilty, durability and flexibility of his garments, Devoa designer Daisuke Nishida invited celebrated Ashtanga Yoga practitioner and teacher Yuya Sarashina to perform his daily practice wearing certain key pieces from the spring-summer 2012 collection in the gallery of the label’s Tokyo exhibition.

This was captured on both video and camera in order to better understand the performance and aesthetic condition of the clothing in such extreme use. The designer hopes to incorporate his findings into the design of his new FW12 collection, which will debut in Paris this January.
